BULB:

a found object sculpture on liminality and queer identity

The elements present in this piece are: a house-shaped shadow box, soil, sea glass, dried flora, clothes hangers, space-patterned silk pillowcase, and yarn. I wanted the finished project to resemble a plant bulb emerging, with dual profiles coming out of it.

I have hidden myself, and I have broken out of myself. This work expresses a feeling of growth, of discovering a queer identity, of freedom but also a rootedness. I incorporated light and shadow to express a kind of internal opposition–of learning, and unlearning, and discovery.

I’m Sammy and I use they/them pronouns. I’m an avid reader, small-time gardener, and aspiring author. I live with my wife, our dogs and cats, and my hens in the hills of the Ozarks. I gravitate toward themes of liminal spaces, southern landscapes, generational traumas, and queer identity. This is where I dig in.
